He's the guy. Thats Prof Anthony Cummins and myself at a party organised by my juniors recently.
Back to the point. Our family medicine posting consisted of visiting 4 different clinics and GP's located around KL namely Klinik Alam Medic Puchong, KK Setapak, KK Sentul and HKL OPD. We would go there every morning and do things such as follow the doctors in their consultation, perform some procedures in the treatment room, draw some blood from patients if we're lucky and even do some antenatal screening.
Despite our obvious lack of knowledge in most of the medical topics ( you cant learn medicine in a day), Prof Cummins was never really angry at us. It might be a good thing but it could also be a bad thing. The bad thing is, we never look smart to the eyes of our associate tutors in the hospitals. Most of the time, we end up appearing really dumb because of our inability to answer their questions. We do know the answer to those questions but we just forgot. Maybe we should pay more attention to what we've learnt before and perhaps even revisit them sometimes.
Well, Prof always mentions this quote. Not that Malaysian doctors are bad doctors but just that patients tend to perceive doctors as bad doctors if they don't prescribe medicines which in turn, influences our good doctors to prescribe unnecessarily and the cycle goes on. Our prof always tells us that we should be the generation who would break this vicious cycle and bring about change to Malaysian healthcare.
The interesting part about the teaching we get in this module is, the main goals are to develop the students professionalism and attitude towards medicine. Knowledge can be obtained by anyone with enough effort and time but the attitude of a caring doctor who also maintains a professional integrity cannot be developed overnight. It has to be sewn into an individual's development and that is exactly what our professor tried to do with us.

Here's a picture of group C with Dr Zainal at KK Setapak. Interestingly, Dr. Zainal was the person who requested to take the picture. Prof was really happy with that.

When prof decided to belanja us a meal at SABA, Cyberjaya. I really love the food here. Must be the best middle east food around KL.
These pictures were taken on the last day of our family medicine posting at Hospis Malaysia, Cheras. We had our final presentation on palliative care that day.
